The Local Environmental Quality team at Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful completes marine litter surveys every quarter on 12 beaches across Northern Ireland. As part of this work, the beaches must be cleaned within 2 weeks of each survey to ensure that there is no duplication of litter data in the next quarter’s survey.
If your group, business or organisation could help us by cleaning up any of the beaches listed below during April, July and October of 2024, please get in touch.
Why does the Local Environmental Quality (LEQ) Team ask for volunteer support for clean-ups?
The LEQ team carries out a litter survey across 12 beaches each quarter. This survey data is then collated into our annual marine litter report.
Following these surveys, we ask for the support of volunteers to clean up the beaches to ensure there is no duplication of litter in the next survey and to help improve our local beaches.
Who can volunteer?
Anyone! We recommended groups of around 10 to 20 volunteers; however, it can be achieved with less people. This can be corporate volunteers, community groups, or even a group of family and/or friends.
When can I do a beach clean?
We ask volunteers to aim to complete their beach clean within a few weeks of our surveys taking place. Volunteers have the option to choose the best date/time that suits them. We always recommend that all beach cleans take place at low tide, to ensure both the beach and litter can be accessed.
You can check tides times for local beaches here. To find tide times, search for the beach or area you plan to visit, and you will see the tide forecast for each day. The darker blue arrow pointing down indicates low tide and the lighter arrow pointing up indicates high tide, e.g. low tide on Saturday 13th April is at 8.23am and again at 8.51pm.
What information do I need to collect during a beach clean?
We ask that volunteers collect the following information during a beach clean:
Yes! The LEQ team will be able to lend you litter pickers and bags for your event.
What do I do with the rubbish I collect from the clean?
Usually, your local council will be able to help by collecting the rubbish. You will need to contact them in advance to arrange this. You can also bring the rubbish to your local amenity site (local dump) for disposal.
